CJ asks govt bodies to mend their ways
The chief justice made these remarks while hearing three petitions filed in 1992 against the release of poisonous and polluted water in the sea.
The bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Chaudhry Ejaz and Justice Ghulam Rabbani, heard the petitions.
The court directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), SITE, Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qaim Authority (PQA), Defense Housing Authority (DHA), Cantonment Board, Landhi Industrial Area and federal and provincial secretaries on environment to submit a comprehensive plan containing proposals and suggestions to address the issue of sea pollution on March 10.
During the hearing, KPT lawyer Khalil Ahmed told the court that 75 percent of the industrial waste was being thrown into the sea without taking any preventive measure.
The KPT had offered the City Government its help to build a treatment plant, he said.
On this, the Chief Justice remarked that what steps were taken by all these organizations and why the issue was not yet solved?
“Is it necessary that court intervene on every issue?” the CJ remarked.
