Whale show resumed at SeaWorld
The show had been shut down since veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau, 40, died Wednesday after rubbing a 22-foot, 12,000-pound orca named Tilikum. The animal grabbed her ponytail and pulled her into the water in front of about 20 spectators. The medical examiner says she likely died of traumatic injuries and drowning.
More than 2,000 people packed the park's stadium Saturday for the first show since Brancheau's death.
The audience seemed thrilled, applauding and cheering as the whales zipped around their tank and splashed spectators during the show — with the theme of "believe," about a young boy who sees an orca and dreams of one day becoming a whale trainer. It was a fitting tribute to Brancheau, whose family said she always wanted work with the giant whales.
At one point during the show, a young girl was brought on stage and given a whale tail necklace.
"I just wanted to be here for this show. It's so special," said Russell Thomphsen, 65, who said he is a season-ticket holder for SeaWorld. "This touches so many lives."
Spectators packed the enormous outdoor amphitheater despite chilly, rainy weather, with the orca pool registering at 52 degrees. The whale trainers received a standing ovation as they approached the platform before the show, part of the multimillion-dollar enterprise centered around "Shamu" — the stage name given to all the performing orcas.
Several SeaWorld employees wept as the photo montage set to music was shown.
"It was very moving," said Molly Geislinger, 33, who came from Minneapolis with her husband and 21-month-old child.
However, she noticed a difference in how the trainers acted.
"They looked like they were being very careful," she said. "They looked very cautious today."
Indeed, the trainers weren't allowed in the water, meaning the whales' handlers did not surf on top of the marine mammals or fly into the air. Instead, the trainers — wearing orca-like black-and-white wetsuits — directed the whales from outside the huge tank's acrylic walls. They coached the creatures to splash the front-and-center rows a few times, much to the delight of onlookers.
SeaWorld officials have said trainers won't swim with the orcas until they finish reviewing what happened to Brancheau.
Jeff Steward, who came to the show with his wife, called the memorial "a very emotional start."
He said they enjoyed the show, adding: "It's a tragedy, but these things happen when you're dealing with wild animals."
SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment President Jim Atchison said Friday that Tilikum will remain an "active, contributing member of the team," in part because the killer whale show is big business at SeaWorld. The company owns more killer whales than anyone else in the world and builds the orca image into its multimillion-dollar brand. Tilikum did not perform Saturday.
The timing of the killer whales' return to performances reflects just what the sleek black-and-white mammals mean to SeaWorld, which the private equity firm The Blackstone Group bought last fall for around $2.7 billion from Anheuser-Busch InBev in a deal that included two Busch Gardens theme parks and several other attractions.
There are two other SeaWorld parks — one in San Antonio, and one in San Diego.
No animal is more valuable to that operation than Tilikum, the largest orca in captivity. Captured nearly 30 years ago off Iceland, Tilikum has grown into the alpha male of captive killer whales, his value as a stud impossible to pin down. He now has been involved in the deaths of two trainers and requires a special set of handling rules, which Atchison wouldn't specify.
John Galloway, of Palm Coast, Fla., said he didn't want to see the killer whale shows end because of the tragedy.
"I think they know what they're doing," he said of the trainers. "Me, myself, I wouldn't be down there doing that."
No relation between SA, Taliban: Saud Al Faisal
"Pakistan is a friendly country to us. Therefore, seeing any kind of dangerous trend in a friendly country, one is not only sorry but also worried," Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal told reporters here.
It is the duty of all political leaders in Pakistan to unite to see that extremism does not find it way to achieving gains in that country, he said.
The minister was asked whether Saudi Arabia was worried about the situation in Pakistan because of extremism.
He said extremism can only be tackled through a united political leadership in Pakistan. "We hope this is what will be achieved."
Asked about collaboration between al-Qaeda and Taliban forces in the region, he said "there is no relation between Saudi Arabia and Taliban.
"Our relationship was abrogated because Taliban gave sanctuary to al-Qaeda. Since then and till today we have no relations with Taliban. That will give you an indication of how seriously we look at the issue."

Who is cooking what against CJ
Editor Investigation Ansar Abbasi in his report stated that although authenticity and credibility of such intelligence reports remain in question, some of these reports are really interesting. One such report talks of a government move to organise pro-president and anti-chief justice demonstrations.
Another report talks of a possible assault on the chief justice inside his Court No 1 or even outside to embarrass him. Another report generated by the National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) of the interior ministry last month, which warned officials concerned in Islamabad about a “Conspiracy against the government”, said The News/Jang Group was likely to plant a story about the government’s plan to embarrass the chief justice.
The NCMC report, which has as its subject “Conspiracy against the government”, was circulated on January 28 and reads: “A reliable source has revealed Jang/News group is likely to plant a story that the government has planned to embarrass the chief justice of Pakistan. For the purpose some lawyer(s) may physically attack/slap and/or abuse Mr Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in Court No 1.
“This story would be floated in journalist circles and likely to be published by the Jang/News group (most likely in a day or two). This exercise is aimed at creating and accentuating an atmosphere of distrust and hostility between the government and the judiciary. “2. The government should pre-empt such a move, asking authorities in the information ministry for the needful.”
The NCMC report was dated January 28, the day when the crime reporter of The News Shakeel Anjum, while quoting an intelligence report, reported a government-sponsored group of miscreant lawyers was preparing to create disorder and chaos in Court Room No 1 presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during proceedings on any contempt of court case.
“The objective behind the ‘plan’ is to cause embarrassment to the chief justice and show defiance to the apex court decisions, The News has learnt on good authority,” the report said.
The News report said the intelligence report was submitted to the interior ministry. The News report added: “The interior ministry has issued orders to take ‘stringent’ preventive measures to foil any such bid inside the Court Room No 1, which, if happened, will only trigger yet another conflict between the government and the judiciary, which already have strained relations in the wake of the apex court verdict on the NRO.”
According to Shakeel Anjum, a day before the story was published, i.e., January 27, he had talked to a top police official of the Islamabad Capital Administration, who had confirmed the receipt of the intelligence report and had also revealed he already had a meeting with the interior minister on the subject. There was no mention of any conspiracy against the government or the involvement of the Jang Group in such a “conspiracy”.
However, a day later, the NCMC circulated the report about the “conspiracy against the government”. According to another intelligence report on February 14, 2010, a central woman leader of the PPP met two ex-student leaders of the Quaid-i-Azam University belonging to the PSF, the student wing of the PPP, in the parliament loges and were assigned the task of coordinating with students of educational institutions and universities in Islamabad to arrange student protests in favour of the president and against the chief justice.
The report alleged the student leaders were also paid Rs0.5 million for the job. The names and mobile numbers of the two students were also given in the report.
When approached by The News, the students admitted to have organised such demonstrations but denied to have received money or had done so on the direction of any of their central leader. One of these students said that it was their own decision to hold a demonstration in support of the political mandate given to the president by the people of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, an Islamabad police source confided to The News some top police officials of the ICT were invited by a powerful minister recently at his residence and it was suggested to them to put men of special branch in the CJP’s squad. The source alleged it was suggested to facilitate some sponsored people to create embarrassing scenes for the chief justice in public places or in the courtroom.

Pakistan accepts India’s demand on team change

As a result, Pakistan decided not to send the members of these two ministries on Indian insistence, sources say.
The demand came just a day before the resumption of foreign secretary level talks in New Dehli.
It is feared that this move may hamper the bilateral talks even before its resumption.
The delegation that includes the Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit and seven other members will depart for Delhi on Wednesday.
On the other hand, Spokesman Basit denied that India had made any such demand about change of the delegation members.
He said that it is same the 8-member team, which is scheduled to visit New Delhi from the first place.
However, sources told Geo correspondent that it was decided on Tuesday’s meeting that eight-member team comprised of six officials of foreign ministry and two members of interior and water ministries. But due to the Indian demand, two more members of foreign ministry has been replaced by interior and water ministries’ officials.

India to discuss trade, commerce with Pakistan: Mufti
The assurance came during a meeting between Chidambaram and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti in New Delhi. It was also assured that adequate banking facilities would be set up to facilitate trade, a PDP release said here.
Mehbooba brought to the notice of home minister the bottlenecks in trade on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawlakote routes. The trade was begun in 2008 during the Congress-PDP government.
Chidambaram also said steps would be taken for creating infrastructure facilities at trade centers of Salamabad in Uri sector of Baramulla and Ranger in Poonch district of Jammu province, the release claimed.
"The PDP president and the home minister reviewed the over all situation in the state," it said.
She said the divided families, whose plight had prompted the previous government to reopen the traditional routes, continued to suffer separation and the bus service, which had been started with lots of hope, was becoming less and less popular.
She told the home minister that many Kashmiris were being denied passports on flimsy grounds. "This issue needs to be addressed by the Home Ministry," the release said quoting Mehbooba.
Earlier, speaking after the laying the foundation stone of Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari border on Saturday Chidambaram said: "We have not got a MFN (Most Favoured Nation) status that is a fact and that's a complaint we make, it is a fact of life but because we do not have the MFN status that doesn't not mean that all trade and commerce should come to an end.
We will continue the demand for the MFN status but we will also continue to encourage trade and commerce".
To give boost to the trade between the two countries India has given MFN status to Pakistan in 1998 but Pakistan is still reluctant to reciprocate with the same gesture, he said

The PML-N condemns the incident that occurred yesterday, as the event plunged the country in the uncertainty and the President House outgrew its limits, Sharif told.
He said yesterday’s incident was an action re-play of November 3, 2007, adding the government is targeting the judiciary to safeguard its corruption in preference for their corruption to the respect for the judiciary.
The Army should have the role stipulated in the Constitution, he said.
Nawaz Sharif said he forcefully warned the government to ensure the supremacy of the Constitution, adding his party categorically rejects the autocratic method adopted by the government.
He said the judiciary was restored by the people not the government which only issued a notification, informing the journalists that he had told Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani a day before not to delay the implementation on the recommendations of judges’ appointments.

‘We can make harsh decisions in the coming days and will protest in and outside the Parliament and mobilize the masses. We will not allow anyone to spoil the institutions for personal motives,’ he said.
Had the Charter of Democracy been implemented, then there would not have been these problems, he asserted demanding President Zardari to bring back to Pakistan his wealth siphoned off to Swiss accounts; this is the money hard-earned by the people of Pakistan.
The country has been turned into a circus, he added.
